BOS Monitor Service

BOS runs a single service, visible on the system tray.

This service is responsible for all the timing and scheduling of the BOS application and activates all the time related tasks.

The BOS Monitor Service starts on system startup (prior to user's login) and uses the system account to operate. It can be viewed on the system's services list.

In Winodws9x/Me, in which there are no services, the Monitor Service runs as a regular executable file on 'Start-up' folder (login is required).

In case the BOS Monitor is down - neither sessions nor any other automatic process of BOS will run. Always make sure the system tray icon is visible.

Right-click on the system tray icon, reveals its menu:

  • Restore Monitor Window - Shows the BOS Monitor windows (see next paragraphs).
  • Restore DiskAlive Window - See next paragraphs.
  • Pause BOS Monitor Service - Puts on hold all action BOS Monitor service should initiate. The service is still present in the system.
  • Resume BOS Monitor Service - Resumes the  service after a pause.
  • Stop BOS Monitor Service - Shuts the BOS service down. It is possible to restart the service through the BOS application (Menu -> Tools -> Start BOS Monitor service) or through the system's services list.
  • Stop BOS - See next paragraphs.

BOS Monitor Window

Double-click on the system tray icon opens the BOS Monitor Service window.

This window shows the next session's start time.

When a session is running, it shows the overall progress of backup. If several sessions are running at the same time - the operator can browse and view other sessions using the two arrow buttons (below the hawk icon).

It is safe to close this windows. It gets minimized back to the system tray.

On the BOS Monitor window there are the following buttons:

  • Left \ Right Arrows - Used to switch between each session's view when more that one session is  running,
  • Last Session - Opens the last session with MS-Notepad (or alike)
  • Utilities - Opens a pop-up menu:
  • Show DiskAlive - Displays the DiskAlive window. See next paragraph.
  • Stop / Start DiskAlive - DiskAlive activation.
  • Resume / Pause / Stop BOS Monitor Service - As figured.

DiskAlive

DiskAlive is BOS's self-mechanism for inspection of the physical disk drive and resolving its situation and "health" status.

Basically, DiskAlive runs every 'xxx' milliseconds (300 ms default), and run 'xxx' (100 default) reads from equal distant places on the hard drive.

If an error or a read timeout occurred, it will be signaled in the BOS log, and it will generate an error for the user as well.

This feature was incorporated to BOS since in most cases the BOS server hardware is a regular PC - IDE disk, with a simple motherboard - which usually lack hardware monitoring applications able to forecast system failure.

The DiskAlive feature can foresee, in many cases, hard drive failure and send an alert before a disk crash happens.

The DiskAlive can be set off (Stop Checking Drives).
