Installation
Get the latest version of BOS and download it. The updated version can be requested at www.bos.co.il
Run BOS setup file: BOSxxxx.EXE (where 'xxxx' stands for the BOS application's version) and follow the setup instructions.
When BOS is installed on a computer for the first time, BOS will ask for:
- Backup drive letter
Select the hard drive (C:, D:. F:...) to which BOS will store and manage all its backups.
This drive can not be a network drive (mapped drive).
The selected drive will constitute the 'Backup Drive', and BOS will create there a 'backup' folder for all backup storage and management. BOS will not take over the selected drive but only this 'backup' folder. You can freely use this drive for any additional purposes.
The BOS application will be installed, typically, on 'C:\Program Files\BOS - Backup prOxy Server'.
Then BOS will run a 'First-Time Configuration' wizard to set the following:
- Default login account
BOS needs access to a local and network computer for the backup process using regular login accounts (e.g. DOMAIN \ Username & password).
You need to assign at least one backup login account for BOS's use, at this point of setup.
See more information at login accounts.
- Email settings
The use of e-mail is for alerting, messaging, sending restored files via e-mail (as attachments), and more.
SMTP or MAPI methods have to be selected. Then, enter your email server (Exchange server, ISP service) and the default e-mail address to which BOS will send e-mail.
This use is optional and can be skipped in the setup process.
After the steps above are completed, BOS will run a first 'Test session' in order to perform a system check, and the setup will end, if no errors occurred.
A shortcut should appear now on the desktop, and the BOS icon on the 'Quick launch' bar.
First Run
BOS has a step-by-step wizard accessible at any time (buttons on the left side).
At first run, the wizard's 'Welcome' screen opens, to allow starting work with the wizard's assistance.
More information about the wizard can be found at the Wizard's Help page.
BOS Monitor Service

On the 'System Tray' an icon will appear too: it is the 'BOS Monitor Service'.
Double-clicking it will display the service.

This service is in charge of BOS's timing and scheduling,
and runs the backup jobs according to the schedule settings.
Explorer Shell
BOS also adds 'Explorer-shell' menu (on the system's explorer, right-click will reveal the 'BOS Backup' menu).
The BOS explorer-shell will appear in the explorer menu whenever there is a file or folder context that can be: backup, or restore. More than one folder or file can be selected, and it is also possible to select both - folders and files- together.
The 'BOS Backup' explorer-shell works coherently with the 'BOS Wizard'.
More information about the wizard can be found at the Wizard's Help page.
The explorer-shell can be used in several ways:
- Backup Now!
To add the selected file(s) and / or folder(s) to the backup storage.
This will backup the selected item(s) directly to backup storage, and will pop-up the 'BOS Monitor Service' allowing to view the operation in progress.
- Create new backup...
This option will collect the selected folder(s) and file(s) to a new backup session.
The 'BOS Wizard' will open at the stage of viewing the selected items, and you will be able to continue from there.
- Add to existing backup...
Adding the selected item(s) to an existing session.
By selecting a pre-defined session from the session's list, the selected item(s) will be added to this session.
- Restore...
BOS will search this file on the backup storage, and if it already exists there - BOS will display all the file's versions.
After selecting the desired version, the operator continues with the restoration's process.
If the file does not exist in backup, a message will be displayed.
