Exchange Recovery
BOS System enables the recovery of Exchange servers at conventional backup level, or at the special BOS backup level.

At conventional backup level, it is possible to backup the Exchange server in the same way as most backup solutions known worldwide:

  1. Backup during work time through Open File Manager.
The advantage of this method is that there is no need of shutting down the system's services in order to perform backup.
The disadvantage, is that sometimes unstable files are backed up, which difficult fast recovery.
BOS software can make use of this service in order to perform a full backup of the server's files.
  2. Shut up of all related services, backup of all files in the software directory, and reopening of the services. The disadvantage of this method is certain server downtime.
The advantage, is a thorough and full backup of all software files.
Special indications and tools for the performance of this process with BOS software.
  3. Activation of NTBackup software on the server itself, and backup of the software's folders during worktime, to a file on another folder.
The advantage of this method is the ability to perform backup during work time.
The disadvantage, is that the software might result slightly complicated at adjustment, scheduling and restoring of the server, and that the backed up data will be stored on the same server.
BOS software can backup this file and keep former versions of it on the BOS server.
  4. Performance of a full copy of the server system disk through a Ghost-like software.
The advantage here is that the copied disk is identical to the server disk. In any case of server disk failure or damage, it will be possible to replace it and bring it back to work at minimal time.
The disadvantages of this process are that it requires server stoppage, it is sensible to operation failures and errors, and therefore it is only practical to perform once in a while.
BOS Software allows to perform current updates to a copied disk drive with the Disk Extender utility.

In all mentioned methods, the main advantage is the full backup of the server's environment, and the main disadvantage is the need to backup all the data volume always, even if the changes or updates in the database have been minimal.
An additional disadvantage is that because of the data volume being in most cases big, these backups are performed on a daily basis only. That means the lack of backup updates along the work day itself.

At Chief, we recommend to perform such backups once in a while in order to allow a fast system recovery.

At the special BOS backup level, it is possible to perform continuous and updated backup of all data contained on the Exchange Server, in a way that allows immediate recovery of any mail message or schedule, at any time, and even when the complete server is inactive.

BOS software will back up all server data contents every number of minutes in the same way as explained for Outlook backup to a natural disk environment, which is independent of additional factors.
At any time, it is possible to restore every single message with a mouse click.

BOS software allows the creation of a new PST file from a whole mailbox. This solution provides the ability of giving back to critical corporate users their complete mailbox within minutes. Those users will be able to continue their work with updated data while the server is still partially or completely down.

The main advantage of this solution is that the data volume transference in each backup is minimal, for only new or updated data will be transferred for backup.
As a result of this, it is possible to schedule multiple backup sessions a day, keeping the recovery system fully updated all the time.
An additional advantage is that this system, differently from any other existing backup system, is independent of the server's existence to allow access to the data kept in it.
